Rice Wreath Homemade Christmas Ornaments
Here's what you need:
Will make 1 Christmas ornament
* items are optional
- Uncooked white rice
- Clear or white Elmer's glue(white lightens the food coloring so you may need to add more drops to get the desired color. )
- Food coloring(my family experimented with several different colors and they all came out beautiful.)
- Small empty butter or margarine tub with lid(you will need a small lid for each Christmas ornament you plan on making that way you don't accidentally deform your Christmas ornament trying to pull it off the lid before it's dry. )
- 1/4 Measuring cup
- 1/2 Measuring cup
- Spoon for mixing
- Scissors
- Construction paper(you can use any color of construction paper, yarn, or ribbon to give your wreaths a Christmas look)
- Yarn or thin ribbon
- Hole punch
- Hairpin
- Ornament hook
- Pliers
- *Glitter
- *Acrylic
Here's what you do:
- Shorten the hairpin so that it measures about 1" long using the pliers.
- Measure out 1/4 cup of glue into the butter tub, then add 3 drops of the food coloring to the glue and mix. If the color is not to your satisfaction, add 1 drop of food coloring at a time until you get desired color. Once you have the desired color of glue, mix 1/2 cup of rice into the glue until all the rice is completely coated with the colored glue.
- Spoon the rice mixture onto the butter tub lid and shape it into a wreath. Push the hairpin into the edge of the wreath to use as a hanger and let it dry over night.
- Here's where you can get really creative, you can use the hole punch and punch out red berries from the construction paper, cut out green holly leaves, red and white poinsettias, etc to decorate your wreaths with. Add glitter to your cut outs to give your ornaments an extra eye catching sparkle, but don't forget to spray them with acrylic to ensure your glitter stays on. Tie some bows with the yarn or ribbon to glue on the top of your wreaths, attache your ornament hooks to the hangers, and go hang your new homemade ornaments on your Christmas tree for all to see.

This looks like a frugal craft for Christmas. I like that it allows for plenty of individuality -- the color of the rice and the embellishments.
